Newnham is a well-defined community in the South-West corner of Cambridge, with excellent local shops, a large park and playground, close to the river Cam and the start of the footpath through Grantchester Meadows, and with quick access to the city and University sites, the surrounding countryside, and the motorway network. The name Newnham Crofts was first recorded in the mid-thirteenth century, referring to cottages and attached fields ('crofts') between Barton Road and the current site of Newnham College.
